Dear student,

My name is Mónica. I am from Madrid, Spain.

Would you like to learn Spanish in a fun way, different from the traditional one? If so, welcome!

HOW AM I AS A TEACHER?

See how my daughter has learned numbers, additions, handwriting, sight words and how to read in Spanish and English with me. Fun and creativity are the foundations of her learning. Besides, I channel her learning via her interests as a child: art works, games, stickers, stories, play dough and so on.

I apply the same principles (fun, creativity and interests) to language teaching for teenagers and adults.

WE LEARN WHEN WE ENJOY WHAT WE STUDY!!!!

ABOUT ME

MY METHODOLOGY

I follow active learning and student-centred methodologies (the Task-Based and Action-Oriented approaches). The emphasis is put on performing tasks and on learner’s autonomy as you, as a student, will learn Spanish by doing things with the language.

A task is any activity of real life (writing an email or a Whatsapp, buying clothes in a shop, renting a car, ordering food in a restaurant, asking for information, reading a digital newspaper…) but carried out in class. This means that my lessons are focused on doing things with the language (using grammar and vocabulary in context) so that you can face communicative situations in real life. The emphasis is placed on acquiring communicative competence, not on studying grammar or memorising long vocabulary lists by rote learning, which is quite boring.

I design activities for adults and for teenagers. I can create activities to match your interests, needs, tastes and how you learn.

My activities aim at learning Spanish in a natural way, as children do. Books are mainly focused on teaching formal language, but we, native, use colloquial language in our day to day. This everyday language is not shown in books, but, if you do not know it, you will not be able to engage in conversation in a natural way. I want you to learn this colloquial language (expressions, idioms and figurative language), but also formal language.

My activities aim at connecting to your emotions. You can talk about your likes, your memories, your favourite songs, meals which bring you back to your childhood… There is also room for humour, which is a fun way to learn. It has been scientifically proven that we learn what appeals to our emotions and what we enjoy.

On my website, you will find videos, songs, Kahoot and Booklet quizzes, questionnaires, audio, images, meaningful written texts, word-clouds, role-plays, debates…In summary, different types of activities to match all the learning styles and to make you have a good time while learning Spanish.

Click on your target level (A1, A2, B1)  or on Leaving Cert Spanish and get ready to learn!!! Or, if you want to practice your speaking skills, click on Temas para conversar.

MY STUDIES

I have two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in English Studies: Language, Literature and Culture and another in Environmental Sciences, and four Master’s Degrees, among them, one in Post-Primary Teacher Training and one in Spanish as a Foreign Language (graduated with Honours).

I am a post-primary registered teacher in Spain to teach five secondary education subjects (English, Biology, Geology, Environmental Sciences and Scientific Culture), and in Ireland (Spanish and English) and a Further Education registered teacher (languages and enviroment) in Ireland by the Teaching Council.

MY WORKING EXPERIENCE

Before teaching Spanish, I was an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for six years and a Maintenance Manager for two years in two multinational companies. However, at one point in my life, I realized that I wanted to become a teacher so I left my previous professional career and began a new career in the educational field.

I did an educational volunteering with teenagers at social risk for 6 years. I was a Spanish language assistant in a Secondary School in Dublin for an academic course, so I can provide grinds for the JC and LC Spanish exams (Ireland).

MY HOBBIES

I love walking in the countryside, reading, gardening, watching birds and teaching things to my daughter.

PRICE

The first lesson is free.
